Karella (Momordica charantia) is also known as the “bitter melon” or “bitter gourd” and is classified as a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, is a tropical and subtropical vine that is widely cultivated for its edible fruit, which ranks among the bitterest vegetables and is best consumed while still green, like cucumbers and green bell peppers.
The fruit is oblong and has a distinctive warty appearance on the outside. It has a hollow cross-section with a thin coating of flesh enclosing a core seed cavity containing large, flat seeds and pith.
